Parish News

RESPECT LIFE
Pope Benedict calls us to “make God’s love present in the world.”  The US Conference of Catholic Bishops present the theme, “We are created, loved, and redeemed by God, priceless in his eyes”, as an invitation to respect all human life.  There is an opportunity to help those in particular need by donating to the Respect Life Collection (second collection) at all masses next weekend, Sep. 30/Oct 1.

IT’S A GALA!
Join the fun!  Dinner, dance, and silent auction (something for everyone: big prizes, little prizes) at the Doubletree Inn at 3rd and Ludlow, on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7pm.  Cost is $50 per person…make your plans now to attend this benefit for IC.  For more information call Christina Braaksma at 298-0818 or Charlotte Flohre at 254-7654.

GIFTS OF TIME/TALENT NEEDED
The 5:00pm Mass is in need of ushers to meet, greet, and seat parishioners; collect tithe, and assist with the communion count.  If you are interested, please see Andy Rado after Mass.
In the event you have a family member or friend who is unable to walk up to the altar for communion, please inform an usher.  In the absence of an usher, please stand next to the person needing communion and a Eucharistic Minister will bring communion to him/her.
The 5:00pm and 11:00am masses also need lectors.  If you are interested in reading one of the lessons at Mass, please contact Jeanne Schoenharl at 256-5231.

FOLK CHOIR NEWS
Congratulations, thanks, and God go with you!
Four members of the Saturday choir graduated from Chaminade-Julienne High School in June and are now off to college.  Nathan Eloe served at IC for eight years, and is attending the University of Missouri – Rolla as a Computer Science and Physics major.  Mark Shoemaker also served at IC for eight years, and he is a Music Performance major in the conservatory at Capital University.  Chris Scupski served our community for five years, and is at the University of Cincinnati studying Architecture.  Patrick Martin is attending Miami University (major undecided) after two years of service.  We congratulated them on their achievements in high school, thank them for their years of dedicated service to the parish, and pray for God’s protection for them as they move on.
The Saturday 5:00pm Choir is always open to new members!
We meet from 3:45pm –4:45pm on Saturdays, and for 90 minutes during the week.  If you are interested in joining us, stop by after Saturday mass or call Laurie Eloe at 374-2015.  No experience is necessary, and we welcome singers and instrumentalists who are in the 5th grade through Free Spirits age.

Congratulations to our newest winners!  For only a $5 donation, they won $100 every time the Ohio Lottery called their numbers.  You can get your Winner’s Circle tickets in the main vestibule after mass on the fourth weekend of the month, or in the Rectory during regular business hours.

PARTNERING

WAS IT SOMETHING I SAID?
Having adult children who no longer practice the Catholic faith can be painful for many of us.  How does a parent interact with that son or daughter?  What responsibility should a parent continue to carry?  Jane Bensman will present an evening entitled, “Was it something I said?” on Tuesday, Oct. 3, from 7:30-9:00pm in the Smith Bldg at St. Helen’s Church.  For information or reservations, call Joan Torres at 256-8815.

VISIT BY SR. HELEN PREJEAN

Coming to Dayton on Wednesday, Oct. 25 is Sr. Helen Prejean, Catholic activist who works in prison ministry, and central figure in the movie Dead Man Walking.  Sr. Prejean has also written The Death of Innocents, which discusses the treatment of the imprisoned poor.  In preparation of her visit, the St. Helen Book Club invites you to join them in the Big Catholic Read and discussion of that book.  The discussion will be held on Thursday Oct. 19 at 7:30pm in the Smith Building at St. Helen’s.  For more information, call Debbie Goldberg at 253-2647.

STEWARDSHIP
Twenty thousand for my brand new car,
Twenty thousand for my piece of sod.
Fifty thousand I paid to begin a house
A dollar I gave to God.
Yet there is one big question
For the answer I still search:
With things so bad in this old world,
What’s holding back my church?

LEAVING A LEGACY

Immaculate Conception Parish has thrived as a community of faith since 1938.  We thank God for the many women, men, priests and religious who have left legacies for our Catholic school, churches, education, spiritual and social services.  Now it is our turn, and we pray that we will be as generous as our forbearers in our service and ministry to future Catholics.  The idea of generational planning and giving has always been essential to the life and success of the Church and its members.  Please give a gift that keeps on giving.
