LENTEN REMINDERS – FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday, February 6, 2008 and Good Friday, March 21, 2008 are days of abstinence from meat and also days of fast, that is limited to a single full meal.  With regard to Good Friday, the teaching of the Second Vatican Council should be recalled:

Let the paschal fast be kept sacred.  Let it be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, prolonged throughout Holy Saturday, so that the joys of the Sunday of the Resurrection may be attained with uplifted and clear mind (Constitution on the Liturgy, No 110).  The other Fridays of the season of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.  The law of abstinence binds all Catholics 14 years and older.  The law of fasting binds all Catholics from their 18th birthday until their 59th birthday (canons 97 and 1252).

With regard to the obligatory days listed above, however, there are frequent questions about the degree of seriousness of the matter.  The teaching of Pope John Paul II may be simply paraphrased: the obligation to do penance is a serious one; the obligation to observe, as a whole or “substantially’” the penitential days specified by the Church is also serious.  No one should be scrupulous in this regard; failure to observe an individual day of penance is not considered serious.

People should seek to do more rather than less.  Fast and abstinence on the days prescribed should be considered a minimum response to the Lord’s call to penance and conversion.

2008 TWO-PRONGED LENTEN PROJECT – H.O.P.E.

The two HOPE Lenten projects are:  A Tabernacle for St. Patrick’s Parish in Vale, Oregon and reversible basketball jerseys for the middle and high school students of Red Cloud Indian School in the diocese of Rapid City, South Dakota.  Lenten envelopes contain a flyer with more information on the Lenten projects and a HOPE report.  Thank you for your continued support.

DISCIPLESHIP RETREAT II

Our Lenten Retreat, the second retreat in a series of Discipleship Retreats, “Sermon on the Mount: A Call to Discipleship,” will be on Saturday, February 23, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with lunch included.  This retreat will be presented by Fr. Satish Joseph.  Registration forms available in the church vestibules.  Please complete your pre-registration form and return it with a $10.00 fee per person to the Rectory, or place in collection basket at Mass.  This event is sponsored by Ite Missa Est.

ROSARY ALTAR INVITATION

2008 GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS

The 2008 Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass for couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary will be on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 2:00pm.  Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk will be the principal celebrant at St. Christopher in Vandalia.  Couples celebrating their Golden or Silver Wedding Anniversary during 2008 should notify the Rectory by February 15 at 252-9919.  There are no tickets to the mass and due to the large number of attendees, there will be no reception following the liturgy.

GUIDEBOOK

Guidebook Publishing is compiling our annual directory and would appreciate your parish sponsorship.  Please call the Rectory to speak with Bob about guidebook advertising for your company or business.  Guidebooks will be mailed out this spring.

BLOOD DRIVE

Our next Blood Drive will be Monday, February 18 in MSH from 3:00 to 7:00pm.  You can register after all Masses on February 9 & 10.  GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE and make this blood drive a big success!

ST. VINCENT FOOD PANTRY

When was the last time you wondered where your next meal was coming from?  Our St. Vincent DePaul food pantry hears daily from our neighbors who are in need of food for their families.  To help keep our shelves stocked, we have placed a barrel in the main vestibule for you to drop your food and other non-perishable donations.  We appreciate all you can give…but please, we CANNOT accept items that are past their expiration dates.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL 2008 CAMPAIGN

The CMA funds six ministries: pastoral education (seminarians, deacons, and lay pastoral ministers), Catholic Social Services, St. Rita School School for the Deaf, chaplains for hospitals and prisons, retired archdiocesan priests, and college campus ministries.  The Archdiocese annually spends over $7 million on these ministries, and about $3.5 million of that was funded by the 2007 AAFD.  Our goal this year is to fund $4 million for these ministries from the CMA.  Those freewill offerings from parishioners will greatly reduce our dependence on assessments and investment income.  The public financial kickoff is the parish commitment weekend, which is February 16-17, 2008.

CAN GRANDMA RAISE TWO ABANDONED CHILDREN?

Rio and Nia’s mother had a history of drug-related problems.  One day, mom unexpectedly left the two children with their grandmother in Dayton and did not return.  The grandmother who chronically suffers from multiple sclerosis was not physically capable of caring for your children 24-hours-a-day without help.  A Catholic Social Services case worker arranged for the children to attend the Miami Valley Family Care Center during the day.  At the day care center operated by Catholic Social Services, the children received special academic support and counseling.  The agency also arranged additional medical and support services for the grandmother.  Government assistance for daycare was not initially available to the family because of custody issues.  Support from CSSMV donors helped the family until government child support could be arranged.

With the help and support of Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley, the children are able to stay in a stable and loving home with their grandmother.

Catholic Social Services is just one of the ministries supported by the Catholic Ministries Appeal.  To find out more, visit www.catholicappeal.info.

WELCOME VISITORS!

We are glad you are visiting us. For your information:

1) Restrooms are available on the lower level.

2) Hearing aides are available from the ushers.

3) Please let our parishioners near you know that you are a visitor so that they may welcome you and answer any questions that you may have.

PRAYER CHAIN

In Luke 11:9, Jesus says to us, “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.”  We encourage you to call the Prayer Chain anytime you, a friend, neighbor, or relative is in need of prayer.  We have a team of 13 people who pray daily for all the requests we receive, and we invite you to join this ministry.  Call Mary Bochenek at 256-4737 to submit a prayer request or to join the team.

TAX STATEMENTS

Due to recent changes in tax laws, beginning with contributions made in 2007, parishioners (who itemize their tax returns) will no longer be able to deduct contributions to the parish unless they maintain a bank record or written contribution statement from the parish.  If you wish to ensure deductibility of your contributions, please use a check or your parish envelope.  The parish will track contributions made using parish envelopes, and will, upon request, produce a written statement of contributions made during 2007.  Cancelled checks and other bank records are also sufficient documentation.  The parish cannot track cash contributions not in parish tithe envelopes.  If you do not have tithe envelopes, call the office at 252-9919, and we will get them ready for you.

CAN WE SOLVE ALL THE PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD?

Through the Archdiocesan funded Campus Ministry Program at UC, students are able to experience service and spiritual opportunities.  Some excerpts of reflections from UC students about their experiences on Spring Break Mission Trips – 2006 follow:

Maggie Wilhem: “I went on a mission trip to St. Louis.  We went to a neighborhood called the Ville and met people from St. Matt’s church, a predominantly African-American parish.  I learned how important it is to listen and understand people.  Just because they live in a bad neighborhood doesn’t meant they aren’t hard working people.  The main thing I took from the trip was the importance of praying and asking for God’s grace and strength.”

Colleen Pater: “I had a wonderful time. It struck me, at the end of the trip, how the work I did seemed so small to me, but it had the potential to make a huge impact on the life of the woman who lived at the home we worked on.  It was also a chance for me to stop and recognize how blessed Ia m, and how fortunate I have been in my life so far.”

Campus Ministries is just one of the ministries supported by the Catholic Ministries Appeal.

USA POVERTY FACT

Children under the age of six are particularly vulnerable to poverty.  In 2005, there were 4.8 million children under six living in families in poverty.  January is Poverty Awareness Month.  Visit http://www.usccb.org/ccd/povertyusa/povamer.shtml to find out what more you can do to break the cycle of poverty.
