CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL 2008 CAMPAIGN

Next weekend is CMA collection weekend.  Please pledge your support for six of our very important regional church ministries, through the Catholic Ministries Appeal.  100% of your contribution goes to Catholic Social Services, campus ministries, lay and ordained ministries education, St. Rita School for the Deaf, support of our retired priests, and chaplains for our hospitals and prisons.  Our parish goal this year is $20,000.00.

Please visit www.catholicappeal.info for more information, and to make your pledge today.  Thank you.

THEMES FROM CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

LIFE AND DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON

The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society.  This belief is the foundation of all the principles of our social teaching.  In our society, human life is under direct attack from abortion and euthanasia.  Human life is threatened by cloning, embryonic stem cell research, and the use of the death penalty.  The intentional targeting of civilians in war or terrorist attacks is always wrong.  Catholic teaching calls on us to work to avoid war.  A nation must protect the right to life by finding effective ways to prevent conflicts and resolve them by peaceful means.  We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person.

WELCOME VISITORS!

We are glad you are visiting us. For your information:

1) Restrooms are available on the lower level.

2) Hearing aides are available from the ushers.

3) Please let our parishioners near you know that you are a visitor so that they may welcome you and answer any questions that you may have.

PRAYER CHAIN

In Luke 11:9, Jesus says to us, “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.”  We encourage you to call the Prayer Chain anytime you, a friend, neighbor, or relative is in need of prayer.  We have a team of 13 people who pray daily for all the requests we receive, and we invite you to join this ministry.  Call Mary Bochenek at 256-4737 to submit a prayer request or to join the team.

TAX STATEMENTS

Due to recent changes in tax laws, beginning with contributions made in 2007, parishioners (who itemize their tax returns) will no longer be able to deduct contributions to the parish unless they maintain a bank record or written contribution statement from the parish.  If you wish to ensure deductibility of your contributions, please use a check or your parish envelope.  The parish will track contributions made using parish envelopes, and will, upon request, produce a written statement of contributions made during 2007.  Cancelled checks and other bank records are also sufficient documentation.  The parish cannot track cash contributions not in parish tithe envelopes.  If you do not have tithe envelopes, call the office at 252-9919, and we will get them ready for you.

ST. VINCENT FOOD PANTRY

When was the last time you wondered where your next meal was coming from?  Our St. Vincent DePaul food pantry hears daily from our neighbors who are in need of food for their families.  To help keep our shelves stocked, we have placed a barrel in the main vestibule for you to drop your food and other non-perishable donations.  We appreciate all you can give…but please, we CANNOT accept items that are past their expiration dates.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL 2008 CAMPAIGN

The CMA funds six ministries: pastoral education (seminarians, deacons, and lay pastoral ministers), Catholic Social Services, St. Rita School School for the Deaf, chaplains for hospitals and prisons, retired archdiocesan priests, and college campus ministries.  The Archdiocese annually spends over $7 million on these ministries, and about $3.5 million of that was funded by the 2007 AAFD.  Our goal this year is to fund $4 million for these ministries from the CMA.  Those freewill offerings from parishioners will greatly reduce our dependence on assessments and investment income.  The public financial kickoff is the parish commitment weekend, which is February 16-17, 2008.

BRINGING HELP TO THOSE IN NEED

It all began with a call to the CAREline, part of the Caregiver Assistance Network, a program of Catholic Social Services of Southwestern Ohio.  A grown daughter wanted to bring her mother home from the nursing home, but her apartment was not handicapped equipped.  She did not know where to begin.

The CAREline caller contacted the deacon from the St. Vincent DePaul Society of a local Catholic church.  The deacon went to the home of the daughter to discuss the possibility of acquiring a wheelchair ramp to bring her mother home to live with her.  The deacon applied for financial assistance through the Gifts of the Magi Program, a collaborative effort between Catholic Social Services, the St. Vincent DePaul Society and Catholic Telegraph readers.

The ramp was quite costly, but with the dedicated efforts of the elderly woman and her three children and the family’s church, the family was close to acquiring their ramp.  A local vendor who is active within the agency’s annual Caring Matters Conference, part of the Caregiver Assistance Network, obtained a used ramp and installed it in the daughter’s home.  This allowed the family to bring their mother home to live with and be cared for by her loving family.

Catholic Social Services is just one of the ministries supported by the Catholic Ministries Appeal.  To find out more, visit www.catholicappeal.info.
