MISSIONARIES OF ST. CHARLES – SCALABRINIANS

The Missionaries of St. Charles – Scalabrinians, founded by Bishop John Baptist Scalabrini in 1887, is a worldwide Religious Order of priests and brothers with the specific mission to assist in the spiritual and social needs of migrants and refugees. The Scalabrinians serve migrants of many different ethnic backgrounds. Their apostolate ranges from multiethnic parishes to centers for migration studies, from refugee camps to chaplaincy for seasonal workers, from radio and television programs to legal conferences. They serve migrants and refugees in thirty nations around the world.

The Gospels reveal the compassion Jesus had for all people, foreigners as well as his own countrymen. He answered the question, “Who is my neighbor?” with the parable of the Good Samaritan, showing that any person in need falls within our scope of responsibility. The Scalabrinians seek financial support to continue their ministry to migrants and refugees.

Rev. Aldo Vendramin will preach the Annual Mission Appeal at all Masses next weekend, Feb. 3 and 4. The Scalabrinians seek our support to continue their ministry to migrants and refugees.

PARISH NEWS

RIGHT TO LIFE SUNDAY
This weekend is Right to Life Weekend. Special candles will be available for purchase in the main vestibule following the 11am and 6pm Sunday masses; you can also make a donation at the doors of the church. All proceeds will benefit Elizabeth’s New Life Center.

ST. VINCENT HOTEL
We are looking for recipes! Our St. Vincent DePaul conference, along with 28 other parish conferences are looking for recipes to be used in a cookbook; all proceeds will help support the activities at the St. Vincent Hotel. You can email your favorite recipe to vincentcookbook@aol.com, or mail it to Bill Loftus, 1133 S. Edwin C. Moses Blvd. Suite 300, Dayton OH 45408. Deadline for submissions is Sunday, Feb. 11. Questions? Call Gerry McLaughlin at 254-5974 or Anita Ruppert at 253-5920.

MASS BOOK NOW OPEN
If you would like to honor someone who has died, is ill, or who is going through a rough time, an easy way to do this is to schedule a mass in their name. The mass book is now open for scheduling your mass intentions beginning January 1, 2007; call Katherine at 252-9919. Please observe the following guidelines:
1) During the week, only one intention is allowed per mass; therefore we operate on a “first come, first served” basis.
2) On weekends, one mass must be set aside for “All Parishioners”. For the other two masses, we will honor as many separate intentions as possible. (Never two of the same intentions at the same mass from the same donor for the same person.)
3) There is no upward limit to the dollar amount necessary for a mass stipend. Only the lowest amount of five dollars is noted in diocesan policy.
4) We cannot promise exact dates, but we will do our best to accommodate your requests.

VOCATIONS
Discerning our vocation in life is usually a difficult process. As they say, “there are rarely trumpets and midnight visions.” But, as Christians, we are called to follow Christ, who always obeyed the will of God the Father, no matter what. Pope Benedict XVI spoke on this topic of God’s will when he ended his first homily as Pope, saying: “Are we not perhaps all afraid in some way? If we let Christ enter fully into our lives, if we open ourselves totally to him, are we not afraid that He might take something away from us? Are we not perhaps afraid to give up something significant, something unique, something that makes life so beautiful. Do we now then risk ending up diminished and deprived of our freedom? No! If we let Christ into our lives, we lose nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great. No! Only in this friendship are the doors of life opened wide. Only in this friendship is the great potential of human existence truly revealed. Only in this friendship do we experience beauty and liberation. And so, today, with great strength and great conviction, I say to you, dear young people: Do not be afraid of Christ! He takes nothing away, and he gives you everything. When we give ourselves to him, we receive a hundredfold in return. Yes, open, open wide the doors to Christ – and you will find true life. Amen.”

VOCATIONS
The powerful examples of holy people are inspirational to young people who seek authentic witnesses to truth in our broken world. The lives of people like Blessed Teresa and Pope John Paul II serve as a challenge to the young to live boldly for God as radical witness to the saving Gospel of Christ. Roughly one third of all young people report feeling they might be getting called to the priesthood or religious life in their youth. If you are young, courageously explore this possibility. If you know young people or have young children, encourage them to be open to any option in their pursuit of God’s will.

CDs & DVDs FOR SALE
Fr. Satish has prepared a two-CD set featuring “Bread of Life” and “The Eucharist Step by Step”; and a DVD with “The Eucharist Step by Step”. The CDs sell for $20, the DVD for $15, and both can be purchased for $30. The monies raised will benefit India missions and the IC Adult Faith Formation, Ite Missa Est. You can purchase the CDs and DVDs after masses, or in the Rectory during regular business hours.

REGIONAL PARTNERING
The committee representing Regions 5 and 6, Ascension, Immaculate Conception, and St. Helen, met on Thursday, July 4 at IC. The role of this committee is as follows: “The tri-parish collaboration committee is a sounding board for the pastors with input from parishioners representing all the parishes. This committee can gather ideas, brainstorm initiatives, and evaluate collaborative efforts to benefit all the participating parishes. As the culture of the parishes evolves to naturally include collaboration in their work, this role may be assumed by other parish bodies including staff, parish councils, and ministries.” Some initiatives that are already underway: a pulpit exchange—the pastors will decide the date; Outreach Committees – continue to explore new ways for collaboration. Some exciting ideas are in the works. More information as it becomes available.

PARISH NEWS

FREE SPIRITS
Happy New Year from the over 50 crowd! Our next meeting is Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 1:00pm in MSH. Bring your pennies for Polish Poker, a friend, and a snack to share. Reminder: 2007 dues can be paid at this meeting. For more information call Mary Umina at 254-4405.

ITE MISSA EST
On Wednesday, Jan. 10, the IC Adult Faith Formation will present “Oh My God, Another Crisis!”, lessons in crisis management. This event is free, but donations are gladly accepted.

PRAYER CHAIN
In Luke 11:9, Jesus says to us, “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.” We encourage you to call the Prayer Chain anytime you, a friend, neighbor, or relative is in need of prayer. We have a team of 13 people who pray daily for all the requests we receive, and we invite you to join this ministry. Call Barb Kohlreiser at 258-0207 to submit a prayer request or to join the team.

TITHE ENVELOPES
Remember to pick up your 2007 tithe envelopes in the main vestibule. We ordered them for active parishioners who have used them on a regular basis in the past six months; if yours aren’t there, add you name to the list located on the table in the main vestibule, or call Katherine at the Rectory, 252-9919.

MSH USE
Many parish organizations use the various meeting rooms in Msgr. Sherman Hall during the week, and our maintenance crew works very hard to ensure that the rooms are ready. Using the parish calendar, they unlock the appropriate rooms for that day. PLEASE DO NOT close the doors when your group is finished, as the doors will lock, and other groups will not be able to get in for their meeting. Maintenance will lock up in the evening. Thanks for your help!

OUTREACH
When was the last time you wondered where your next meal was coming from? Our St. Vincent DePaul food pantry hears daily from our neighbors who are in need of food for their families. To help keep our shelves stocked, we have placed a barrel in the main vestibule for you to drop your food and other non-perishable donations. We appreciate all you can give…but please, we CANNOT accept items that are past their expiration dates.
